In 1996, I made an artistic statement. I said that in Asia, you can get a wish to come true if you make 1000 origami cranes. I then attached the red HIV/AIDS ribbon to the crane's beak, and said I wished for a cure. That year I missed the three friends who passed away within months of each other. I still miss them. Then I had an uncle who got murdered. I have an aunt who is recovering from cancer.
As an artist, I make my own images. But by stepping back, I see everyone else's. There is virtue in stepping back. The world is a wonder, whether I'm here or not.
Now I am asking people to send me their cranes. What do they wish for? What are their causes? Are they recovering or dying? Are they victorious or depressed?
What about you? Are you missing someone you love? or Did you just found him or her? Are you happy or sad?
It's time for everyone else to make one.
I'm also asking them to show their cranes in their own websites, or blogs, or internet videos or even emails. Add a song, or a poem, a story, or pictures, ribbons, and memories.
In time we will all cry with you, laugh with you. Celebrate with you. Let your cranes fly with the rest of ours. |
